You'll start by unpicking the design to make sure that you're able to solve some of the workflow questions before you ever touch a node. Then the model will be built up logically, part-by-part, introducing more techniques as you progress.

When the main column is complete, you'll learn 2 different methods of repeating it: a simple array and an advanced lattice deformation method.

In this masterclass you'll build up the project following a workflow that closely mimics how you'd work on your own projects - starting with a prototype to test an idea, and then refactoring to support the range of behaviours required.

There is a special process required to create the topology for these columns and so you'll be planning the process around that one step.

You'll start out by interrogating the design and choosing what steps to take before getting into the nodes. You'll create an artist-friendly workflow to control the fundamental column shape. You'll build the column base mesh ensuring parametric controls tie everything together. Lastly, you'll replace the base mesh with panels that follow a specific form language.

You'll learn how to work with SDFs in a scalable and efficient way using loops, how to make advanced selections on both meshes and curves, how to sort geometry elements, and how to approach a range of maths-based parametric controls.

This exercise was originally chosen as something simple to introduce students to a range of introductory techniques, but, like many things that appear simple, the level of control required was far more advanced. This masterclass includes workflows that will stretch your procedural modelling and enable rich and complex creations.
